Shin Saimdang (1504-1551) is a true Korean Icon! She is the first woman to EVER appear on a South Korean Banknote, the 50,000 won bill and appears on the Korean National Stamps. For over 500 years of Korean History, she has been held in high esteem. She was REMARKABLE for so many reasons!!! She was highly educated, and in the 1500’s, that was unheard of! She was a student of poetry, painting and calligraphy. She was ahead of her time, in so many ways! Saimdang: Light’s Diary is based on the life of Shin Saimdang, who was a female artist and mother of the Korean Confucian scholar Yulgok in the 1500s. Lee Young Ae plays two roles, Shin Saimdang and a university lecturer with expertise in Korean art history. She becomes immersed in history as she unravels the secrets of Shin Saimdang’s diary and a mysterious painting of a woman.
Song Seung Hu plays an upright, refined gentleman, who first fatefully meets Saimdang in his youth and continues to love her for the rest of his life. His character is described as a “Joseon Gatsby,” who lives a passionate life without compromise.
After 14 years, South Korean actress Lee Young Ae is back on small screen with a new historical drama “Saimdang: Light’s Diary” on SBS. And, on its time slot it is currently topping the viewership ratings. In fact, it is as strong as the popular SBS drama “The Legend of the Blue Sea” which ended on January 25.
“Saimdang: Light’s Diary” was one of the most awaited drama for the drama fanatics. It was initially supposed to air on Oct. 11, 2016 on Drama Fever. It premiered on Jan. 26, Thursday.
